Hello everyone. Please introduce yourself and post a short position on this quote from the introduction to your text book.
In contrast to the instant obsolescence of popular culture, the study of Western culture offers an alternative that has passed the unforgiving test of time. Long after today's heroes and celebrities have fallen into oblivion, the achievements of our artistic and literary ancestors - those who have forged the Western tradition will remain.
I will go first:
My name is Michelle Barron. I have lived in Tampa nearly all my life. I received a BA in English Literature in 1982 and an MFA (painting) in 2007, both from USF. In addition to teaching at HCC, I work as the art instructor and coordinator for Project Return (www.projectreturn.org.) You can see some of my paintings at the archives of the University of South Florida's Contemporary Art Museum: http://www.usfcam.usf.edu/Media/MFA2007Show/
My position to the above quote from our text book is that it makes too easy a division between popular culture and "high" art. This division has been largely discredited in the post-modern era. Some might argue that there are popular roots to all our "high" art. One that comes to mind is the ballad form. Not only has it stood the test of time but has served at the basis for complex jazz forms. Jazz was considered barbaric only a little over 50 years ago, but it is regarded as high culture now. The whole question of popular vs. high culture is very complicated. Another thing that comes to mind is the comic book. The comic book will never be "obsolescent."
Hello,My name is charles webb,But please just call me charlie.I`m the guy in class with the eye patch over my right eye.I`ll be 34 next month on the 8th,I can do any phase of building a house,From permitting to final inspection, same with building anytype of swimming pool, also do anytype of mechanic work from cars to trucks to diesal to a basic lawnmower, also did 2 years at I.T.T. tech in electronic engineering from 94 to 96,whitch i never used that education. But all and all, thats what i do for a living,is,build anything and fix anything or remodel anything.I don`t sleep much my whole life so i`m always doing something, and since work is here and there,I`ve decided to try out college, and from what i`ve seen so far,I`m liken .No 1 will ever know everything,But it`s nice to know alot.
ReplyDeleteNow as for my opion and short reply to the question?
In our day and age of technologies,we seem to forget and take advantage of the basics that are needed to survive, and those basics originated,In and with the earliest western cultures. It had taken hundreds of years for agriculture, writing of language and documentation by script, commerace, society, law and order to become the building blocks that made and created the world as we know it.But just in my 34 years, especialy in the past 15 years, crop seeds are being genetically alterred to combat pests and not reproduce, written language is half written in text messageing and speech for the most part, cattle and foul are being mass produced in half the time it had taken for over 30,000 years,by our ancestors.SO for all the standards of everyday life and proper manners and propper aproaches to everyday basics that are disappearing on a daily, monthley, yearley basis in these days and times we are living in,,,The parchments and documentation and art, etc;,, from the cave drawings to the agricultural methods,to the artisns that documented the hystery of life for thousnds of years. The basics of life maybe dissappearing daily,or becoming obsolescence,But that written, painted and sung, documentation will outlast any deviations, our time or actions, plays against it.
Yeah,That wasnt to short.sorry.C`Ya in class...
after proof reading my post, and it being fine,i hit post,BUT Now it posted,It left out some words and a sentance or 2,,,So if some sentances just stop and dont make sense,it`s not me.Buyer Beware?
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Alexis I'am 21 years old and I was born and raised in Tampa, fl. I work at Tampa General Hospital and have been there for 4 years. My goal is to get an AA in Business Administration and go on to USF to get my Bachelor's Degree.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on this above quote is basically even though people are intrigued with popularity now that will soon fade and the need for real culture will arise and that is something that never goes away. Unlike the demand of the next new hit, American history never get's old there is always something new about old history that people find important and interesting. The celerities and rich people we now know will be long gone and history and art will be a non stop process.
Hey my name is Adam. I am 20 years old and I was raised in Baltimore, and I work at Wal-Mart as an overnight frozen stocker, and I have been working there since I graduated high school. I am going to HCC right now so that I can fulfill my pre-requisites and then transfer to the Pharm D program at FAMU.
ReplyDeleteNow for the response to the quote. The first thing that comes to my mind when i read this quote was that it says that in any one time period that the pop culture very quickly became obsolete, but at the time that these forms of literary and artistic achievements were created they were probably popular. I think that what pop culture does is make everything viewable to the public so that they can make their own judgements on the subject. It is through the judgement of the people as a whole that the artistic/literary achievement earns it's way into history as something great. The instant obsolescence of pop culture is a necessary thing because without it we would have a difficult time figuring out what was just an ok piece of art, and which ones were masterpieces.
Hello there my name is Anthony Whitehurst.... I work for Verizon doing customer service and sales taking phone calls. I am married with no kids and 2 dogs. As to the quote, I believe this information is incorrect. As of now, we look to the past for answers but in years to come the past may just be the past. People today who do big can be remebered just as much as a artist from decades ago.
ReplyDelete"Let myself introduce... myself" says Austin Powers played by Mike Myers.
ReplyDeleteHey, my name is Carrie. I was born in New Mexico on an Air Force base, but shortly after (at age three) my family was station here in Brandon. This is pretty much where i've lived since. I am going to HCC to either become a Vet Tech or obtain a degree in Aquaculture. Either way I need to make more money to pay for the house my boyfriend and I just bought.
As for my thoughts on the quote above Western culture is where it all began. Even though pop cultures are a fad, they are only there for a short period of time. The art and literature of the past is what helped us all sculpt our own versions of what we think art and literature should be. No matter how it changes or what various fashions it may take on it all derived somewhere and the majority came from Western cultures.
Hi, my name is Marci. I'm 26 and I have lived in the Tampa area all my life.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the quote from the text book, I do see how this is a controversial issue. Who are we to judge what will be considered as "high" culture in the future. I don't think that Shakespeare really meant for his work to be studied for years to come. He created "high" art with what was popular culture at the time.
My name is Andrea Tamborello, also known as Dre or Drea, and I was born and raised in Florida. I am attending HCC to achieve my Associate degree in the Fine Arts and will be attending the University of Tampa to finish achieve my Bachelors degree. As of right now, I currently work for myself as a local Tampa artist.
ReplyDeleteThe comparison between popular and Western culture shows the difference in purpose and vision between artistic expressions. Where popular art is intended to convey current affairs and opinions; Western culture art deals with deeper and more majestic themes such as religion. Western artist such as Michael Angelo thrived on perfection details, and leaving a legacy. Popular artists such as Andy Warhol work on snap shots of a current event and state of mind. In general, the majestic themes of the Western culture remain and the popular art becomes obsolete.
My name is Joe Grill. I have lived all over the place.
ReplyDeleteNot all western culture has stood the test of time. I am sure many pieces of "high art" have been lost to fires and floods. The styles of "high art" we see today must have been popular at it's conception or it wouldn't have been passed along. I think we hold these styles in such high regard because they show us the beginning and evolution of art.
My name is Rachel Drummond, I am a dual enrollment student taking classes at HCC and also completing my senior year of high school at Freedom in Tampa. I am 18 years old and completely undecided on what I plan to study, I am currently trying to make my decision as to which University I plan to attend come fall. Boy, is it stressful.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the above quote is partially incorrect. I think that as time passes and society and culture develop throughout generations and even centuries there are certain aspects that are always going to be remembered. So many aspects of Western Culture have stood the test of time, ultimately standing for something in a present age, but aspects of today and pop culture are sure to be artifacts or pieces that the future will reflect on. While Western culture has been preserved and presented as the precedent for many items in our world today there are absolutely aspects of our present that will be preserved for a future generation. The contrast in the items preserved and the things we recognize are what makes it seem like more has been affective or usefum in todays present age. But, with so many advancements in technology and research what happens now can be as big of an influence on what happens next as Western culture was on what we see today.
My name is Susan Rodriguez but you all can call me Susie. I was born in New York and lived 12 years of my life there until I moved to Florida in 2004. I'm attending HCC to get my associates degree in Nursing and in the future I may transfer to USF to get my bachleors. In my spare time I do volunteer work at the Hillsborough County Animal Shelter nearby the school.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the quote is concerned, I believe that there is still some of western culture that is yet to be discovered. I believe that some have dissapeared into oblivion while some have not yet been recognized yet. There are some artists and art that have made a lasting impression on us today just as pop culture has made an impact on our society and lives today. However, as some aspects of pop culture may come and go, western culture will still remain somehow.
My name is Jeff. I was born in Arlington Heights, IL and now live in Tampa. I am attending hcc to get my associates.
ReplyDeleteThe quote is explaining that over time society has changed based on the current needs of their surroundings. However, the history remains strong for the culture, because it shows the development from the past to the future.
Hello to everyone who might be reading this my name is David Letchworth, im 20 born and raise all my life here in tampa.
ReplyDeletemy comment is this , yes there will be a type of art or music or something that might stuck around forever , n there might be music and art that will fad, but no this just cause the piece of music or art fad from your eyes it wont fad away from the people who made it , and to the people who that music or piece of art has change their live in someway.
Hey.. My name is Amber, Im 19 as of tomorrow! Born and raised here in Tampa.
ReplyDeleteAs to the quote above.. I say.. things are always changing, but the history will remain, it is what shaped our thoughts and ideas about music and culture we know in todays society. The fame of the music and art will fade because there is always something new, its those that made and impact to people that will remain for they will knows what helped develop what we know is art, music and culture.
Yo, My name is Argyle Neal but most people call me Blay. I am 21 years of age and I was born and raised in Tampa. Did some Nursing school out of the country and have now returned to finish school in America. In my spare time I like to bboy or read.
ReplyDeleteFor the quote above makes me think about how there are different visions of art. The art that is most popular at the time is usually the one that becomes the whole vision of art for the time period. It also makes me think about how things are ever changing. Cultures, languages, fashion, things such as this will always be changing but the fact is that it is being remembered as history all the same.
Hey everyone! My name is Michelle and this is my second and final year at HCC. My major is in elementary education. I plan on using this not only for teaching but to use it for missions also to spread the Word of God. I have lived here in Florida for my whole life and am 19 years old:)
ReplyDeleteOne thing that struck me about this quote is when it said popular culture now will no longer be known later on. I don't necessarily think that is true because at one point the culture we are learning about today was more than likely popular. It's history! For the fact that it is history it did not go away. We are always creating history. Today tomorrow will be history. It just never stops.
Hi, my name is Lillian Lowe. I prefer to be called Lily. I am 19 years old and I am working toward getting my associates degree in Early Childhood Education. I currently work at A Children's Kastle Early Learning Center. I work hard at what I need to do and make sure I give it all my best. I was born and raised here in Tampa Florida and I was adopted into my family when I was 5 years of age.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the quote above, my mind began to shift back to a memory of when I was in grade school. There was always some kind of in the momment fashion that would grab society by storm, It still happens today weather its a new dance craze like the "soulja boy", or a new pair of tight jeans the we now call "skinnies". Later these kind of fashions will quickly fade and be forgotten. Even though it will be forgotten however it will still be in our history as a time period that the fashion was once amazing. Even though the future will more then likely hold more instances of the same situation weather it be fashion, music, or the way we talk. Even though these fads will come and ago the fact that they even exsisted will still remain.
Hey, I'm Michael Phillips. I am 20 years old and I was born in California. I am part of a military family and I am an Eagle Scout in Boy scouts. I love to hang out with friends and goof off. Also I love to go to the beach.
ReplyDeleteAs I read the quote above I started to think about art can quickly be changed from a negative perspective to a positive one. I started thinking about how Hip-Hop originally started. In the beginning most people viewed it as something horrible for the youth, something that involved gang and violence. Though some people still view Hip-Hop as such today, more people immerse themselves into the culture today. Though the views of art change within the culture the art itself will not change.
Hello my name is Rizwana i am in the nursing program. I was born in England and moved here a few years ago. I have 7 brothers and sisters.
ReplyDeleteNow regarding the post, everything in life becomes popular and obsolete. It is an ever changing cycle. Everything becomes history and an example from which future civilizations attain knowledge from which take ideas, and form new opinions and facts. This allows the world to develop and become complex thinkers.
Hello, my name is Jen-marie Scheuerle. This is my second semester at HCC. I'm working on my Liberal arts associates, but want to go into biology later on.I was born in Tampa and I am the oldest of five kids. I am currently working on some child care courses to get certified to work in a child care facility.
ReplyDeleteReading the quote above and the comments others have typed, I can see my idea of the quotation being shown in their writing as well. What I think of when I here popular culture, I think of what cultures we see today. And not just in america, but all over the world. While some cultures haven't changed for hundreds of years, some (like America and Japan, for instance) have change rapidly and frequently. The Western culture is defined by the cultures known through the past and how it affect the world not only in that time, but also how it still affects th world today. In fact, many of the popular culture have to some extent been influnced by the past. And as time goes by, the current popular culture will become history as well, while no longer popular, still affecting the lives of people.
Hey my name is Barbara, Im 19 and this is my first semester at HCC. Im studying to get my liberal arts degree so I can move on to study history far away from Fl.
ReplyDeleteMy thought on the text above is that art will last forever. The people that have created this "popular" and as well as "high" art can stand the end time. Its what they have left behind in this world. This is going to be the image of our century when people from the year 2055 will look back and see how we lived, how we thought, and how much our culture has developed.
My name is Samantha Sandy-Montgomery. I am 25 years old and I have just moved back to Tampa in the last year after living in Germany for the last 3 years. I am currently working on earning my Associates degree with the intention of eventually becoming a Physician's Assistant. It has been a slow process but I keep telling myself it will make my achievements that much sweeter.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I agree with the entire quote but I have to agree that the "achievements of our artistic and literary acestors" will certainly surpass those of today's popular culture. Popular culture is fleeting. New fads are developing every day and attempting to keep up is almost impossible. The study of Western culture teaches us the foundations laid by those that came before us. Van Gogh and Beethoven, for instance, are names that will live in on history and continue to be taught in every classroom. Their achievements changed the course of art and music and have influenced, and continue to influence, both areas.
My name is Hak Ting, I also go by the name Gordon, hence the aliases. I was originally from Hong Kong, China. And have been living in the States for about 5 years.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the quote. Mainly because I feel the author is comparing two different object. Modern day popular culture, while still art, is made largely for the purpose to capture large, mainstream population. What the author should be comparing to, just off the top of my head, are new classical music like those of Astor Piazolla, Modern Architecture such as Eiffel Tower, Burj Khalifa, and many more others.
Hi, my name is Justin carman. I've lived in Tampa my whole life. I am a former Marine, now going to HCC using the VA's GI Bill. I'm hoping to get my bachlors at USF after I have completed my two years here at HCC.
ReplyDeleteI believe the quote is say that it is through the arts that history is made. During our lifetime many people will become famous and remebered for sometime after there have past away, but the artist of and writers that are amoung todays famoue people are the one who truly stand to be remebered and to continue to shape our history.
Hello my name is Clint McGalliard I was born and raised in Tampa, Fl and have traveled to Europe nearly every summer since birth, mainly Germany.
ReplyDeleteI would say that our artistic and literary ancestors contributed much of the foundation for how most societies think and operate today and their contributions are overlooked. I think their mainly overlooked because it may not be as interesting as subjects like heroic figures or past tragedies.
